Power plant
Spinach leaf at its best: mitochondria and chloroplast elbow to elbow, transforming light, water and CO2 into oxygen and leaves.

Power of flying
The most powerful muscle on earth: flight muscle.
A fine balance of muscle fibres and mitochondria producing energy and power. Get it right and you can fly.

The beginning of a self
An ovum about to be released for a chance encounter with an expert swimmer. With a hundred thousand mitochondria rearing to go: to power the creation of a new being and pass on the baton to the next generation.

The end of a cell
Apoptosis, controlled cell suicide for the good of all, for better and for worse. The cell structures disintegrate and bleb away. Where did the death warrant come from? Mitochondria, of course, poring out their insides, showing the way to go.

Once upon a time
In the distant past two prokaryotes joined forces. The free living mitochondria somehow got inside an archaeon, and there was no looking back: the path was open for the eukaryotic cell, and with it all complex life on earth.

Barcode mitochondria
Mitochondria as boxes of secrets: of the past, of the future, of life itself. If information is power, mitochondria have the power and the information, in their own genes. Watch this space.
